”Rosy Planet” (2009); 90.9×116.6cm, acrylic on canvas, courtesy of the artist and MATSUO MEGUMI +VOICE GALLERY pfs/w copy right(c) Mai GOTO Goto Mai has involved herself in drawing pictures of ‘ infants, boys, girls .’ They all have eyes that don’t see anything, don’t reflect anything. They all have mouths, the lips of which are vaguely half-open. Their eyes might penetrate those who see the work, or could be looking through them and see something behind them…. But the eyes are not focused. They look like deserted lonely children. Still they might believe in this rosy world. In her last solo exhibition last year, her friends’ distorted faces were the motif. She has switched this to children with vague expressions. After that she has kept drawing the “face” series in the integrated color. In this exhibition, many other collages she created after graduation are also displayed. Her collage includes lots of verbal elements. Mai GOTO |
